Emily is kind of spearheading this effort but I thought I could make a thread about it. On either Tuesday, May 14 or Friday, May 24 (we're trying to nail that down), we're getting a low-cost ($30 for 30 minutes I think?) consultation from Shunpike. Let's use this thread to help Emily prepare for that!

It's a short consult and we're still not headed in a definite direction, so we're probably going to have to keep it simple, my suggestion was basically just to ask "where do we start?" Some specific points we might want to hit on:
- what kind of funding sources might be available to us, how do we prepare to approach them?
- advice on timing of becoming a non-profit organization, if that's the way we want to go
- what other organizations in Seattle should we be talking to? Who should we be making connections with? (Shunpike works with lots of different people, see...)

We had the consultation on the 24th, with Josh from the Vera Project (who is not a Shunpike staff member). Note that Emily recorded this conversation on her phone, so check in with her if you'd like to get that for whatever reason.

Here are my (not especially well-organized) notes:
- Shunpike offers various consulting services that ZAPP may find useful in the future, we should contact them directly if we need more info
- when new ZAPP organizational structure is in place, first ratify everything that had been done by Committee et. al. previously.
- getting initial funding is the hardest step in the fundraising process
- the City of Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods gives grants to organizations that "build community" within city neighborhoods, among others things. ZAPP might be something they are interested in funding. We do not even need to be a nonprofit to get these grants
- the essence of grantwriting is to try to explain what you do in terms that will be appealing to the grant-giving body
- grants tend to be either "restricted" (earmarked for specific programmatic needs) or "general operating" (which you could spend on things like rent and utilities). The latter is much harder to get
- corporate sponsorship may be an option--but what the corporation is doing is essentially buying advertising, i.e. underwriting an event. Something to consider in light of the values of the communities we tend to serve.
- highest fundraising potential is actually in individual giving. Who supports us, how can we reach these individuals?
- we should also be thinking about how we can actually earn money: workshops? Making & selling zines?
- we need to start thinking about our messaging: how do we communicate about ZAPP to different groups?
- Small Business Association might be able to help us with putting together budgets
- for help with governance issues, Board Source may be a good resource

To do:
- check w/ RHH staff on status of 4Culture grant
- collaborate w/ RHH staff on developing a separation agreement--to make the split official, specifying the terms and conditions of that
- contact City Dept. of Neighborhoods about grants
- brainstorm possible individual giving campaigns
- think about partnering with other organizations (Babelsalvage for instance, Bryan Edenfield's publishing co.) to put on fundraising events that could benefit both
- develop different scenarios (i.e. what would ZAPP look like as a non-profit? In a partnership with a bookstore? Etc.) and draft financials based on these scenarios
- check with Small Business Association for help with creating budgets
- contact Board Source about governance?
- talk to Matt Richter at Shunpike; he was just hired by City of Seattle as their cultural spaces person

Josh also said that we could follow up with him if we had more questions.

This looks like a great start for a to-do list. I think since the RHH has received federal grants and local grants towards ZAPP, the need to create a legal entity to take possession of the zine archive is necessary.

Is there any progress towards creating this legal entity?
